Empiricalbox collects some of the projects made by students and ex-students of the University School of “Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana” in the context of the activities of Spazio21, a division that coordinates and implements cross-curricular activities and those focused on contemporary creation.
Born near Turin (IT), Alberto Barberis is a composer, guitarist and electroacoustic performer. He began playing classical guitar at a young age, studying, among others, with Maurizio Colonna, Giorgio Mirto and Bruno Giuffredi. He got the Diploma in classical guitar at the Conservatory of Turin (IT) and the Master’s degree in classical guitar at the Conservatory of Brescia (IT). Alongside his musical activity, he undertook Engineering Studies (in the field of Information Technology and Media) at the Polytechnic of Turin, which stimulated his interest for mathematical applications in musical composition and electronic music. He also studied composition with Giovanni Albini, mathematician and composer. In July 2016 he obtained with honors the Master of Arts in Composition and Theory at the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana of Lugano (CH), studying with Nadir Vassena, Giovanni Verrando, Sylviane Sapir. Since 2012 he is the Assistant Artistic Director of highSCORE New Music Center and from 2016 he is part of the artistic committee of OGGIMUSICA. He is also part of FloatingForest Record, a label and a collective of improvisation and experimental music. Recently he collaborated with several contemporary music ensembles including the Ensemble Recherche (DE), the Eutopia Ensemble (IT), and he took part in many international music festivals, such as OGGIMUSICA (CH), Nachtstrom (CH), Afekt (ET). Alongside his artistic and didactic activity he develops music applications: such as tiascolto (a ear-training software) and Ormé (a spatialization one). In 2016 he won the Werkjahr 2017 of the foundation Christoph Delz (Basel – CH), with a research project on the interaction between orchestral instruments and electronic devices. He is currently teaching “Technology” and “Musiche Attuali” at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana of Lugano(CH).
He graduated in Classical Guitar with first class honours at Claudio Merulo Conservatory of Music in Reggio Emilia (Italy). Afterwards, he mastered his knowledge of the 20th century repertoire under the guidance of Professor Francesco Moccia, embarking on a career as a soloist. At the same time, he founded the experimental rock quintet Athena, with which he released, both as a composer and bass player, two CDs, produced by Pick-up Recordsand the german major label Rising Sun Productions. For years they carried on an intense concert activity. After having started the study of Composition under ProfessorAndrea Nicoliat Giacomo Puccini Conservatory of Music in La Spezia, he moved to Lugano in order to pursue his academic curriculum at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana(CSI), where, under the guidance of professors Nadir Vassena, Bruno Zanolini and Giovanni Verrando, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music (Major in Composition) and a Master of Arts in Composition and Theory with first class honours. He attended several masterclasses and workshops held by representative figures of the contemporary musical scene, such as Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, Johannes Schöllhorn, Bernhard Lang, Salvatore Sciarrino, Ivan Fedele, Riccardo Nova, Stefano Gervasoni, Tristan Murail, Hugues Dufourt, Pierre-André Valade, Jonathan Harvey. His compositions were performed by prestigious ensembles (Ensemble Proton Bern,Ensemble Laboratorium, Ensemble Risognanze, Repertorio Zero (R0), Solisten des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zürich.
